I felt I had to write a review for this as we have found it to be brilliant. Our hens haven't been at all phased by the mechanism - it's not that noisy and it closes fairly softly.We easily added more weight by putting half a breeze block on the lid - this will ensure even the biggest rats can't open the lid by sitting on the treadle plate. We have heavy Marans hens and two Cream Legbars which are much lighter but still can open the lid by stepping on the plate with no problems

This works! It took a little while to train my hens but they have got the hang of it now. I was having a real problem with wild crows, pheasants and other birds eating their food but this has solved that completely. I liked it so much I have bought 2 as i have a lot of hens and they empty this one quite fast. I am going to build it a shelter though as in the rain it does let water in and the food can clog up.

A big hit with the birds

We tried this without a shelter to start with. It was late summer and it worked fine. We sometimes have strong winds with the rain here in Wiltshire. We noticed that, when it is windy and raining, the water is blown through the holes in the centre of the rivets, making the feed damp, so I built a shelter with clear perspex sides. It works well to keep everything dry. We also painted it matt dark green to blend in with the colours in the garden. In the video you can see both Khaki Campbell ducks and Goldline Hybrid hens easily using the feeder. This is after 3 weeks. We used the training advice and had the feeder fully open for 2 days, half open for a day and then we left it closed. One hen mastered it straight away and the rest fed whenever she opened it until they worked it out for themselves.Very NB. If you have ducks, or any birds with long necks, it's very important to put barriers along the side of the entrance so the feeder bin can only be approached by standing on the platform.
